I've been reading The New Rules of Lifting for Women and the author insists that you can't cut calories to lsoe weight. Wha?! Doesn't that fly in the face of every single thing I've EVER read?

I was so confused! I've been having between 1200-1500 calories per day and losing consistently at 3 pounds since I really started watching my calories. Now this? So I'm really glad I read your rant. I'm still not completely convinced that I shouldn't eat less calories than I burn. It's hard to change your mind about something. It's like being told that the sky isn't blue, it's green.

So are you supposed to eat the exact calories that you burn each day? IN other words, if you burn 2400 calories from BMR plus exercises are you supposed to eat 2400 calories? So confusing.

Great blog. Glad I found it!!! Shelley actually mentioned it to me. :)Kelly the Happy Texanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05141980277979631252noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654199466450477041.post-26155578867813831212010-02-08T15:33:17.476-05:002010-02-08T15:33:17.476-05:00Congrats on your 1/2 pound loss! I think it's a wise decision to see how the working out and weightloss progress with 1800 calories. It'll be interesting to watch from afar! Your blog, and people's comments, have made me reconsider going back to have the testing done again. The science makes sense to my brain - just not to my emotions :) Looking forward to seeing how going to the 1800 works for you.Bethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03485696850647359659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654199466450477041.post-86291018446133763392010-02-08T01:32:57.334-05:002010-02-08T01:32:57.334-05:00Glad to hear you are having a better day and being...Glad to hear you are having a better day and being decisive about doing things your way. I have been very aware of the whole body fat/muscle stuff since I started my journey. I really focused hard on eating enough calories and doing equal cardio/strength training so I would maintain my lean muscle. What I have learned is losing muscle is easy and gaining it back is very hard, even just maintaining it is hard.

When I had my gall bladder out back in April I had about 147 lbs of lean muscle in my body. During my recovery and stomach problems several months after wards I managed to drop 10 lbs of muscle. I have never regained that back even with all the weight training I do. So I say think of your lean muscle as very valuable and do your best to hang onto every lb of it if you can. It is like having a special savings account you can draw from. For me, it means that I can eat more calories in a day because my metabolism is much more efficient.

Bottom line though, do things like you want to. I will say I don't think fast is always better. I really believe doing it slow isn't just for your body's benefit but also for your mind. I know for me had I dropped all my weight in a year I would probably already be gaining some of it back. I think taking so long gave me time to fix a lot of issues I had about food, relationships and just life in general.

I also look at the fact that I can eat about 2000 calories a day at 178 lbs and still lose weight. I would much rather have that be the case than to have to live off of 1500 just to maintain my weight for the rest of my life. This is a life long journey after all and I think though it might take a long time to get the weight off I'd like to think mine will stay off because I worked on really fixing myself inside and out.

I think the whole exercise/calories thing is a balancing act. It seems some weeks I can eat more and still lose and other weeks I can't. I think it has to do with stress in our lives, water, hormones, just a lot of things all working together.

Anyway, I have seen people succeed with their weight loss quickly and they seem to be doing great (like Sean). So I do know things can be done all different ways and still work. It really is about what works best for you and just staying aware.bbubblybhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06423578980112090148noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654199466450477041.post-16978825501005808342010-02-07T20:21:25.417-05:002010-02-07T20:21:25.417-05:00Hi Tammy.
