I just remember telling myself that if I could get thru that day, I'd make it, no problem. Run cold water on your hands when you get the urge to smoke.
My dad told me you can't smoke if you don't buy them. He was right. I told myself (always talking to myself) that I would *never* pick up a ciggie as long as I lived after that. It's key. It is SO worth it, though! On the 12th of this month it will be 8 months since I've had a cigarette. I am so happy and proud of myself. One tip: When you crave a cigarette, do something active. Get your heart rate up enough to break a sweat. You will be aware of your lung function and be glad for the job your lungs do for you. As you get more and more away from smoking it will be more and more exciting to feel your lungs working for you. Another tip: Stay away from people who are smoking. Yes, I lost some friends by taking that advice myself, but in the end I am glad I did. I needed to do what I did for me. If someone in your home lights up, go for a walk. Good luck!Karen Greenberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12272747678480176988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654199466450477041.post-30802277918552395382011-01-03T21:22:56.302-05:002011-01-03T21:22:56.302-05:00Tammy, first... Second, you CAN do this!

The desire to physically cause harm to someone will eventually pass, LOL!

This may sound a little off but when I was overwhelmed and I found myself YEARNING a cigarette, I'd chant "I want to be healthy, I want to be healthy, I want to be healthy!" The affirmation helped ease the pressue.

Something else that worked for me was using a breathing exercise that I like to call "fake smoker." I litterally would hold two fingers to my mouth(closed finger), pucker my lips, inhale deeply and exhale slowly. WOW, what a relaxing sensation. I would do it driing down the road, after a cup of coffee, or whenever I was a little overwhelmed. People, generally looked at me and wondered what my problem was, but it worked for me. You will find what works for you too!

Best of luck, you got this!Overcoming Obesityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14295489418095345623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654199466450477041.post-8970959744969548322011-01-03T20:37:09.606-05:002011-01-03T20:37:09.606-05:00Tammy, that's fantastic!!! I remember my aunt saying that someday I would like drinking coffee, reading a magazine, talking on the phone without smoking. I didn't believe her but it was true. What helped me the most was completely changing my routine. I slept until I had to rush to get ready. I came home and began cleaning or exercising. It was still hard. So hard, I never dared even try one puff again. I'd never want to have to go through it again. But it was WORTH it.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12801995499358080379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6654199466450477041.post-91090381169681954672011-01-03T19:23:21.781-05:002011-01-03T19:23:21.781-05:00I'm praying for you both. My mom smoked for almost 40 years before she quit. Since then she's been able to shed SO many pounds because of her increased lung capacity and ability to exercise without wheezing and wheezing and wheezing. Watching my mom jump on the treadmill to walk three miles at 3.7 mph is one of the absolute joys of my life - and of hers.

Know it's SO frickin' hard, but keep at it.
