Gonna' Be A Bad Weekend

Short post. All of my food plans went out the window today. We were away from home for 6 hours car shopping. The good news is Dwayne thinks he found a car he wants. The bad news is, we're going to be away from the house several more hours tomorrow. He's taking the car to a mechanic to get it looked at, and if it's okay then it's back to the dealership for a couple of hours of paperwork and letting them do an oil change, etc. Then we're putting 2 new tires on my car. He said he doesn't want to waste time on me waiting to cook in the morning, so our day is starting off with the breakfast buffet at Golden Corral. I'm assuming it's only going to get worse from there. So I've resolved to forget that today and tomorrow ever happened and start fresh on Sunday when HE'S NOT HERE. I love him to pieces but.....well, you know what I mean. Maybe I can eek out a couple pound loss in the 5 days of good eating I'll have. Depends on how much damage I do between now and tomorrow night. Ugh.

  1. Y'know, a buffet isn't a death sentence. Be mindful, be smart, be cruel. Don't start something you'll regret finishing 10 minutes later.

You've come too far to get sidetracked now...

  2. You're planning to binge? Just because it's an all you can eat buffet doesn't mean you have to make horrible choices and large portions. If you really want to feel on top of the world, then go into that place and have a 500 calorie breakfast. You can do it ya know. Enjoy it, enjoy the company of your man, enjoy the people around you. And when you walk out of that place having only consumed 500 calories---You're going to feel empowered...and full---completely satisfied.
As your "mentor" (you said it---and I'm cool with it) I would be failing you if I left a comment saying... "Oh--go for it!!! You'll be back on Sunday---no biggee."
Tammy---Changing our behaviors with food addiction can be a really tough struggle. You're not doing this as just a means to lose weight, right? You're doing it to reach your optimum weight for life...and that means learning how to handle food in a responsible way in situations like this.
The title of this post tells me that you've decided to let that buffet and your circumstances beat you. That really bothers me, and it really should bother you a whole lot more.
If I were in your city I would seriously tag along and show you exactly what I'm talking about---You can enjoy that place without it wrecking your calorie budget. But is your lust for food too much? Are you looking forward to giving yourself a break from the calorie budget??? If so, that sounds like many of my past attempts...and you know what happened with those.
Tammy, I care too much about your success to sit back and not say something. You do what you feel is right and good...and then write about it---remembering these words I've shared. You decide if this weekend is going to be bad or good...don't let your circumstances decide for you, stealing this away. You might say "Sean, relax---it's just a couple of days---I'll be right back on "plan" Sunday."
You know how many times I've said that in the past??? Did you read Jack's post about the frog in the boiling water?

    My best always Tammy,
I know you have the power to really make this the last time you ever deal with obesity---I know you do. Do you realize it? Because situations like this will come up throughout your life--and if you never really change your brain and face it---it can bring you down.

What's wrong with a 500 calorie breakfast at that place? Nothing. But deciding that it's going to be really bad before hand is a way to give yourself permission to eat whatever and as much as you can hold. Will that really make you feel good?
You'll feel better, much better walking out knowing that you just handled it in a responsible way.

    My best always,
    sincerely
    Sean

  3. Tammy, don't give up on this weekend! Eat small portions and do the best you can. It'll be easier to recover from a "slightly higher than you'd like" day than from a total blowout.

This is practice for the rest of your life, friend. Do it right!

  4. You know, it's true that you're going to have to eat at restaurants where you won't know the calorie counts on everything, and it'll be laden with sodium, but it doesn't mean you have to go crazy. Just make smart choices, and keep your portions small. You know what it feels like when you're full now--listen to that! Maybe just pick some fruit, yogurt and oatmeal at the buffet tomorrow (I've been to that before, and I believe they have all those things). Simple scrambled eggs are good, too. You're gonna have to deal with these situations all your life. The key to making it work with what you want is being in control and not letting all the good tasting food control you. Come on, Tammy, you're strong!

  5. I agree with what Jack said. Also try the one plate rule. You've done it before so you know what I'm talking about!
    Good luck!

  6. Can you bring some healthy snacks with you so that when you go out to eat you won't need as much? I feel for you. BTW, I just screwed up my week with 3 beers and a piece of blueberry pie - what a comination. I'll be lucky if I maintain this week. Don't do what Amy does! Stay on track!

  7. I am in total agreement with Jack - make the best choices you can with whatever situation you face. Shessh - the last two weekends, we have eaten Breakfast at McDonalds, and I STILL came out of there with only 370 calories and 12 grams of fat consumed!
Its good practice for the rest of your new, healthy life!

  8. Good post from Jack. Be strong. I love that he says don't start something you'll regret finishing 10 minutes later. Boy does that ever describe what I do to myself!

  9. WHAT ?? SIX POUNDS ??!!! ** Happy Dance with Jazz Hands AND Spirit Fingers**
You ROCK! How could it possibly be "a bad weekend" on the heals of such a great weigh in ??? Just enjoy (in moderation)! You are doing great. I would venture to guess that even if you ate half the buffet this weekend, you won't gain - but might maintain at your next weigh in - and THATS OK! Take time to celebrate - as long as it doesn't lead to a weight gain - it's ok. You are doing good things - enjoy and soak up the warm glow of accomplishment!

  10. Tammy... it's all about choices. You don't have to make bad ones.. and while the car's sitting at the shop, whaddya gonna do? sit in the waiting room?? Go for a 1/2 hour walk. or longer.

Don't gain back an OUNCE of that 6 lbs.

NOTHING tastes as good as being in control feels.

    YOU have the control.

    YOU have the choices. :)

    take care of you!!!

  11. Oh my dear friend,
I guess since Jack is still the only comment I see here, I guess that means you've been away and haven't---or didn't receive my message from last night.

  12. Be mindful. Eat slowly. Enjoy your food. Stop when you're full. It's as easy (or not) as that.

I'm not of the school that advocates bringing as much of your "own" food with you as possible. Eat what's available, just in reasonable portions.

    Be well!

  13. Tammy

Firstly, thank you for the lovely comments you left on my blog. I agree the internet is so cool! It is amazing for me to "meet" people from half way across the world who are going on a similar journey. Sadly, I don't have as much time for blogging as I would like but I do enjoy reading other people's blogs and I'm so glad to have found yours.

It seems that you've been inundated with responses to the challenges you face this weekend, but I'll throw in my two cents worth too. The one thing I think I have changed about my approach to weightloss, the thing that makes me think that this time will be permanent, is getting away from the binge-diet mentality. In the past, I was either on a diet, or bingeing! (I'm not sure about that e--but if I drop it before adding the ing it looks like bing-ing??!!) I didn't know how to eat normally. And if I was presented with a challenge, then I would just so "Oh well, I'll start again tomorrow, or next week etc". But learning to cope with the challenges is what it's all about. As others have said, make good choices, eat slowly, check portion sizes, then go for a walk! Hope this makes some sense and helps. As you said to me--we can do this, girlfriend!
